Speech recognition

Our software uses the computer's default speech recognition engine to score speech intelligibility. There are several speech engines available for Windows:

Windows 8

The Windows 8 speech recognition engine is preinstalled in the OS. The default speech engine is dependent on the computers language configuration. The following languages are available:

  • US English
  • UK English
  • French
  • Spanish
  • German
  • Japanese
  • Traditional Chinese
  • Simplified Chinese

For Windows 8, you can obtain the above languages, free of charge, by installing the appropriate language pack. For information about installing Windows language packs, please click here.

Windows 7 and Vista

The Windows 7 and Vista speech recognition engine is preinstalled in the OS. The default speech engine is dependent on the computers language configuration. The following languages are available:

  • US English
  • UK English
  • French
  • Spanish
  • German

  • Traditional Chinese
  • Simplified Chinese

Windows XP

The Windows XP speech recognition engine is NOT installed by default. However, there are a number of ways you can install the speech engine:

Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine 6.1

Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine 5.1
